Rating of the domain zones

    On many forums, devoted to the domain, internet, from time to time raised the question of which of the more popular domain zones and therefore more expensive. On the same question I tried to answer in this article.

    You can choose different criteria popularity of domain zones: the number of domains, the number of pages in the search engines index, the prices of transactions of sales of top domains. As a criterion, I took the number of sites in the Alexa top 1,000,000.

    On Alexa Traffic Rank you can download a list of the most popular sites in the Internet (according to Alexa). Rather unique and useful information, I tell you. This list hard to find anywhere else, I am surprised that this list is still free and available for download to everyone. Of course, it's not perfect, and contains some "mistakes", but it helps to understand the general idea of the current state of the Internet.

    So, I downloaded the above file. It is huge in size - more than 20 MB, but the format is very simple. There are the addresses of sites and their position in the top million. Google in the first place, the second – facebook, yahoo - the third. Then, with the help of a simple php-script I calculated, how many sites in the ranking of the zone .com, how much of the area .ru and so on. Then I built the blast zone on these data, and got such a rating of domain zones in Alexa Top 1. In the file list only those areas, in which there are 10 or more sites of the top million, the rest I disregarded.

     So, what do I got?

    Here are a dozen of the winners:

    1.       com => 517727

    2.       net => 64743

    3.       de => 50184

    4.       org => 44072

    5.       ru => 33707

    6.       blogspot.com => 20420

    7.       co.uk => 18634

    8.       info => 14540

    9.       jp => 12249

    10.   it => 11264

    11.   cn => 10408

    I got a dozen of the 11 points, but that's because I did not know what to do with blogspot.com and wanted to bring all the areas, that are in the top of more than one per cent that is more than 10,000 sites. blogspot.com certainly can’t be called a full zone, but the number of blogs in the top is impressive, so I did and made the list.

    Listed zones contain 79.79% of all sites of the rating, the remaining more than 500 zones is just over 20% of the seats.

    Let us analyze the different "weight categories" that is different types of domain areas.

    Unsponsored common top-level domains (gTLD):

    1.       com => 517727

    2.       net => 64743

    3.       org => 44072

    4.       info => 14540

    5.       biz => 3871

    6.       name => 418

    7.       pro => 68

    com - the leader, the king. More than half of the major sites on the Internet placed in this zone. That's impressive. No wonder, this area is the most expensive and it employs most number of names.

    net - in the second place in this area and I do not doubt it. Given the fact that the dot-com virtually everything of value has long been occupied, dot-net can be called the most promising area.

    org - bronze. Quite a surprise to me, that the gap between dot-net not so huge. On the western forums dot-org almost always tied for third place, while in runet many believe that domain info - third.

    info - the fourth place. Top websites in less than three times higher, than in dot-org - for me it's a surprise. Although, of course, it is possible to explain the fact, that the owners of dot-orgs prefer to do major projects, and the owners of the infos often use their domains for doorways and others with which is very hard to break into the top.

    biz - biz, he's the biz. Not the last zone, but to the top-four growth and growth.

    name - the sixth place on the list and 92th in the overall ranking of zones. The bad area, as for me.  Suitable only for your personal blog, but not anymore.

    pro - well, what can I say, hopeless outsider in the overall ranking at all in the third hundred. However, some sales in this area will be, as Vertu and someone buys it.  Doorways will never live there and will not be due to the privacy policy. But it is gTLD. But for myself, I never take the domain in this zone, and for sale too - it must be the talent to sell it.

    SponsoredgTLDs:

    1.       edu => 2964

    2.       gov => 703

    3.       mobi => 287

    4.       cat => 186

    5.       asia => 131

    6.       travel => 106

    7.       int => 69

    8.       coop => 54

    9.       aero => 48

    10.   mil => 38

    11.   jobs => 37

    12.   tel => 16

    49.   ie (Ireland) => 1077

    50.   co.in (India) => 927

    A few words on this rating. I knew that .de is cool, but did not think, that so. First place in the ranking of ccTLD and third place in the overall standings with a narrow margin of dot-net .ru - in second place - nice that runet is so well developed. com.ua - 20 times worse .ru, and 4.4 times worse than the .pl - there is much to aspire to.

    tv, ws, cc - marketing in action, domains such small countries had escaped into the top 50 and ahead of some of the country with a population of thousands of times greater than in those countries.

    I was also surprised that 50 of the top 19 areas - the third level. So, not only here in Ukraine is this situation.

    And, by the way, in Ukraine:

    1.       com.ua (main zone) => 1663

    2.       ua (domain little, but a lot of top-end) => 600

    3.       org.ua (ree, and we love to bowl) => 356

    4.       kiev.ua (best regional) => 277

    5.       net.ua => 164

    6.       in.ua => 115

    7.       dp.ua => 61

    8.       gov.ua => 53

    9.       od.ua => 44

    10.   edu.ua => 16

    I hope, someone will find this article helpful, some idea of the domain areas it provides.

    P.S. Almost forgot about zone .su. It was held on 73 th place in the overall rankings with a score of 588 sites, just between .ua and .nu. Not entirely hopeless area, but not too good. From the category of those, that can do the project, but to sell better not to take anything, except that the superkeys.
